• Bioplastic particles increased algal biomass and EPS production in stream biofilms. • Polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride produced neutral effects on biofilms. • Only bioplastic treatments drove differentiation among biofilm communities. • Bacterial density increased at high particle concentrations regardless of polymer type. • Biodegradable plastics may act as functional substrates, not only as inert stressors.
