• Innovatively SCGs converted into Mg-functionalized biochar for carbon capture. • Functionalized biochar achieved finer pores in mortar, mostly below 10 nm. • Adding 6% functionalized biochar improved strength by 8.24%, absorbed 4.55% more humidity than traditional mortar. • Life cycle analysis showed up to 25.42% lower climate impact for MgB mortar than traditional mortar.
