• The portable macro-FTIR mapping system allows for fully automated area-based chemical imaging. • The Pearson correlation coefficient is used as the z-dimension to generate false-color 3D maps. • This study highlights Pearson correlation maps for fast comparative cleaning assessment. • Macro-mapping enhances both the analytical resolution and the interpretative value of the data.
