• Tunnel K+ loading in hydrothermally grown α-MnO2 varied for tight-contact soot oxidation. • 0.4KMnO exhibits 96% CO₂ selectivity and a soot removal T90 of 346 °C in O₂. • Characterization resutls show tunnel K+ weakens Mn–O bonds and elevates O species. • DFT shows tunnel K+ promotes vacancy formation and O2/NO adsorption.
