• Pre-oxidation significantly enhances the VHCF life of GH4169 at 650 °C. • Surface FGA formation indicates a vacuum-like effect of the oxide scale. • Crack initiation shifts from NbC inclusions to internal/surface Nb-rich oxides. • γ′/γ″ and δ phases impede dislocation motion and delay fatigue damage. • Oxide-induced crack closure and δ phases jointly retard crack growth.
