• A Ga-rich LiAl0.5Ga4.5O8:Cr3+ phosphor is developed for lifetime-based optical thermometry via host composition engineering. • The optimized phosphor exhibits high PL QYs (∼95% internal, ∼51% external), excellent thermal stability (78% intensity retention at 723 K), and a broad operating range (298–723 K). • A strongly temperature-dependent PL lifetime (1.94 ms .→ 0.06 ms) yields a high relative sensitivity of 1.01% K−1 at 423 K, surpassing most Cr3+-doped phosphors.
