• Deep nitrogen removal and high aromatic selectivity were simultaneously achieved. • Hierarchical pores and Ni-Co sites cooperatively promoted aromatization and denitrogenation. • Nitrogen-containing compounds decreased to 0.89%and 0.67%for bamboo and wheat straw. • 6Ni0.5Co-HR5 delivered 51.06%and 50.66%aromatic selectivity for bamboo and wheat straw.
