Abstract

Abstract

• Eggshell modified fish bone biochar (EFB) and eggshell modified rice straw biochar (ERSB) reached high adsorption capacities of phosphorus up to 246.75 mg P/g and 326.16 mg P/g, respectively. • The flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) system with EFB and commercial activated carbon electrodes achieved simultaneous and efficient separation of phosphate (99.28%) and various heavy metals (> 95%) for the first time. • Eggshell-modified fishbone biochar exhibits high affinity for phosphate ions, maintaining this affinity even at low pH levels. This property arises from calcium doping and the formation of phosphorus vacancy active sites following acid washing. This behavior was validated through density functional theory calculations.
