• Pressureless sintering yields >97% density in WC-Ni hardmetals with 1 vol-% Ni. • Bimodal packing efficiency is maximized at 25–30 vol-% total submicron fraction. • Sintering is accelerated by n-WC, while Ni content defines densification pathways. • XRD and HR-TEM reveal an η-carbide (Ni₂W₄C) interphase between WC and Ni.
