Abstract

Considering frequent complaints of patients about insomnia and the manifold therapy proposals, the following questions arise: Is insomnia relevant, what is the function of normal sleep? What are the mechanisms of sleep regulation? In order to correctly assess and adress insomnia, we have to understand the physiology of sleep. In this context, considerable insights have been gained in the last years. Only with these we can aid patients with insomnia and choose the optimal therapy. The presented paper mainly deals with primary insomnia. Secondary insomnia like in sleep apnea or with restless legs syndrome has to be adressed causally and will not be discussed here.
