• Three novel functionally graded origami structures (FGOS) are proposed. • Thickness gradients yield 26.7% higher SEA and 77.8% lower initial peak force. • Angle gradients cut initial peak force by 83.3% and enable programmable stiffness. • Height gradients provide "phase tuning" to precisely shift peak force points.
