• Two anticorrosion primers are collected on historical aircraft. • Zinc yellow primer (4ZnCrO4· K2O· 3H2O) and wash primer with ZnCrO4, nZn(OH)2. • Protection against corrosion is lower for zinc yellow primers than wash primer. • Study of Cr, Zn, O K-edges, P L23 edge with XANES and ELNES confirms the findings. • Reaction products are chromium phosphate and zinc phosphate.
