We propose in this letter the pulse shaping scheme for oversampling based combining. In this scheme, we assume that the pulse widths of the transmit filter and the received filter are both equal to N symbol periods so that the combiner uses $aN$ samples for combining (where we assume that there are a sampling instants for each symbol period). The proposed scheme results in correlations among noise samples so that we can use these correlations to determine the desired system gains for increasing SNR. Two types of desired system gains are proposed: diversity based type and water-filling based type. We show that water-filling based type outperforms diversity based type in the average SNR gain. Furthermore, we show that with the proposed pulse shaping scheme, the effect of ISI (caused by oversampling and band-limited channels) can be eliminated by increasing a and the SNR gain increases with $aN$ .
