• A biochar moringa seed (BMS) absorber was tested for interfacial evaporation. • BMS showed good photothermal properties for interfacial evaporation applications. • Dry BMS rapidly reached about 134 °C within 6 min under IR illumination. • The evaporation rate of BMS reached 6.72 kg m−2 h−1 for steady state conditions. • Biomass-based materials offer an eco-friendly solution for interfacial evaporation.
