• Pollutant removal in 2D street canyon under wake interference flow is investigated. • The performance of canyon ventilation is greatly impacted by different roof designs. • Eaves modify vortex structure and enhance the air exchange near the roof level. • Pollutant removal mechanisms elucidated the impact of urban design on air quality.
