• An experimental method enables precise control and measurement of head-on binary bubble collisions. • Coalescence efficiency is quantitatively linked to impact velocity and bubble size. • A physics-based model predicts the critical coalescence velocity without empirical parameters. • The model shows excellent agreement with experiments and offers utility for industrial reactor design.
