• Increasing carbon addition shifts pore structures from sandwich-like to uniform. • Thermal conductivity decreases with increasing porosity. • A new three-layer model was developed accounting for porosity inhomogeneity. • Model predictions exhibit excellent experimental agreement (MRE=4.16%, R²=0.9856).
