The rhizosphere is a dynamic soil zone surrounding plant roots, where infochemicals (chemical signals) mediate interactions among plants and microbes, as well as among microbial communities. Among these signaling systems, quorum sensing (QS) plays a particularly crucial role. QS is a bacterial communication mechanism that operates cell density–dependently to coordinate collective behaviors, including biofilm formation, virulence factor production, nutrient uptake, and antibiotic synthesis. Bacteria achieve this coordination by producing and detecting autoinducers—small signaling molecules such as acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) in Gram-negative bacteria and various peptides in Gram-positive bacteria. The complex interplay between QS and other infochemicals is critical for maintaining a balanced rhizosphere microbial community, thereby influencing overall plant health. Root exudates serve as rich sources of infochemicals that modulate microbial QS and promote beneficial plant–microbe interactions, particularly those involving plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). However, QS mechanisms can also contribute to microbial pathogenicity and disease development. A deeper understanding of these chemical dialogues—especially interactions between QS autoinducers and plant-derived signals such as flavonoids—is essential for developing sustainable agricultural strategies that harness microbial communities to enhance crop productivity and resilience under both biotic and abiotic stress conditions.
