• Porcine skin is a promising biological dressing material, but gamma irradiation for sterilization can degrade its collagen. • This study evaluated whether ascorbic acid could protect porcine collagen from radiation-induced damage. • Structural and histological analyses confirmed that ascorbic acid preserved collagen integrity. • Tensile strength of porcine skin was maintained following irradiation when ascorbic acid was present. • These results support the use of ascorbic acid to enhance the safety and effectiveness of porcine-based biological dressings.
