• Early-season rains caused over half of total soil loss due to minimal crop cover. • Zero tillage and intercropping greatly reduced runoff and sediment yield. • Runoff and soil loss showed strong positive correlation, highest under bare plots. • Few intense storms drove most of the seasonal erosion. • Conservation tillage and crop diversity improved soil resilience and water use.
