• Thermal and electrothermal processes for rare earth element recovery from energy-transition e-waste are critically reviewed. • Incineration, pyrolysis, roasting, and smelting are compared in terms of efficiency, scalability, and environmental impact. • Electrothermal technologies enable higher process efficiency and reduced emissions compared with conventional thermal heating. • Case studies on WPCBs, permanent magnets, and Ni-MH batteries highlight process-specific recovery challenges. • Induction and advanced electrothermal heating emerge as promising routes for sustainable industrial-scale REE recycling.
