• TiTaO coatings were prepared by controlled oxidation strategies combined Ta-doping. • TiTaO coatings achieve low current densities around 10−7 A/cm2 at 2 V polarization. • Reactive oxidation of O2-TiTaO reserves ICR of 9.1 mΩ·cm2 after long-term polarization. • Ta-doping promote rapid formation of protective TiO2-Ta2O5 film on surface. • Ultrathin oxide film enhances corrosion resistance while reserves high conductivity.
