• Mechanical activation-flotation mechanism for spent carbon anode was proposed. • Recycled carbon materials have been successfully used to prepare prebaked anodes. • Solution fluorides were recovered as calcium fluoride for aluminum electrolysis. • Flotation tailings have been utilized to produce cryolite for aluminum electrolysis. • A closed-loop recycling process for spent carbon anodes has been established.
