• Fertilizer-15N fate at national scale: 37.3% uptake, 31.5% residual, and 31.4% loss. • Regional yield (CC>SC>NC) and 15N uptake% (CC>NC>SC) rankings are misaligned. • Soil total N, pH, and temperature are key determinants of fertilizer-N fate. • A clear N rate threshold exists: ¹ ⁵N uptake% declines sharply above 230 kg N ha−1. • Attainable ¹ ⁵N uptake potential is 48.4% nationally, with the largest gap in SC.
