• First, year-long PM2.5 regional source apportionment study in South India. • Frequent exceedance of WHO PM2.5 guidelines indicating sustained exposure. • Chemical speciation, receptor modelling and mass-meteorology analysis identified biomass burning and urban dust as dominant sources. • Nearest-neighbour analysis using GIS data, government, and field-based data strengthen the source apportionment study. • Seasonal shifts strongly influenced emission source distribution.
