• A 3-mode theory for hollow rods incorporates release-type wall motion. • An effective shear correction factor is calibrated via force equilibrium. • Lateral inertia is decoupled into overall wall motion and thickness distortion components. • Lumped mass gives large stain increase and a delayed strain peak.
