• We propose 2D-CHS, a unified framework for generating diverse 2D complex-valued hyperchaotic maps. • We theoretically verify chaotic behaviors of the proposed map in the sense of LE. • Dynamical analyses demonstrate the rich behaviors and high chaos complexity of the proposed maps. • Hardware implementations verify the practical feasibility of the proposed maps, while evaluations of the resulting PRNGs demonstrate strong randomness.
