Abstract

Abstract

In my response to Caron Harrang's and James Ogilvie's discussions of my paper, I first clarify the evolution of my thinking from beta communication to what I currently describe as osmotic communication, a developmental and phenomenological account of primary sensorial connectivity preceding differentiation, representation, and symbolization. Regarding Harrang's post-Bionian field approach, I propose that osmotic communication need not stand in opposition to field theory but may instead describe the earliest register of experience upon which field organization depends. In dialogue with Ogilvie's extension of beta phenomena, in particular the no-thing and beta failure, I offer that some difficulties with representing and tolerating absence may originate in earlier failures of primary connectivity at a pre-symbolic sensory level. I explore how osmotic processes contribute to both the success and failure of beta formation, and how therapeutic action may at times reside less in interpretation than in sustained permeability to unformed experience. In sum, I suggest that field transformation, beta failure, and osmotic communication represent complementary vertices addressing different phases in the development and metabolization of psychic life.
