• A novel bio-inspired seawater pressure energy conversion system is proposed for ocean profiling floats. • A segmented seawater pressure energy harvesting strategy is proposed and modeled and optimized. • The system can generate considerable electricity compared with the existing similar systems. • The system is lightweight, pressure-balanced and highly compatible with existing conventional profiling floats.
