• Radially Multi-Layered magnetic fluid seal overcomes trade-off between pressure capacity and axial space inclassic seals. • Gas compressibility causes the discrepancy between the theoretical and experimental pressure capacity. • Chain-like structure enhances the pressure capacity but hinders the self-recovery of magnetic fluid sealing rings. • Main cavity pre-pressurization reduces pressure fluctuations and increases the total pressure capacity. • Higher rotary speed breaks chain structure and aids magnetic fluid seal ring self-recovery but cuts total pressure capacity.
