• A Resource-Environment-Economics coupled framework assesses four PV recycling routes. • All routes deliver net carbon benefits of 715–2,791 kg CO2-eq per tonne of modules. • Carbon efficiency and absolute carbon benefit rank recycling routes differently. • Silver and solar-grade silicon recovery, not processing cost, drives profitability. • Circularity index spans two orders of magnitude despite similar mass recovery rates.
