• Retention strategies and rates were gathered from articles, websites, and outreach. • The retention strategies examined were not associated with participant retention. • 25 of 130 studies retained ≥ 80% maternal participants at one year follow-up. • Participant-level factors (e.g. demographics) should be explored in future studies.
