• Chemomechanical transient behavior in coral sand is experimentally identified. • CO2–CaCO3 reactions create new pores, destabilizing saturation and test responses. • Transient behavior causes severe scatter and unsafe overestimation of Nc. • Extended back-pressure saturation stabilizes B-value and restores repeatability. • A practical protocol is proposed to obtain reliable liquefaction parameters.
