• A pH-responsive sodium oleate (NaOA) system has been created for reversible CO2 capture and release. • The system serves as a CO2 fertilizer, precisely supplementing CO2 to boost photosynthesis in tomato leaves. • Applying CO2 gas fertilizer to the leaves effectively promotes the growth of mesophyll and palisade cells. • CO2 fertilization boosts tomato photosynthesis and growth by managing carbon fixation, ROS balance, and oxidative damage. • An effective method is proposed to transform industrial CO2 emissions into agricultural CO2 to enhance tomato growth.
