• Ca0.5Ba0.5WO4:0.5%Bi3+ achieves a variation in diffuse reflectance. • Ca0.5Ba0.5WO4:0.5%Bi3+ realizes dynamic switching and multi-level optical encryption. • The written information could be retained for over 16 days without external stimuli.
