Abstract

Scholars of the 2011 Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia immediately noted the role of organized labor and trade groups in ousting the Ben Ali regime and the consolidation of (the now eroded) democratic transition in the aftermath. For Ashley Anderson this presents a puzzle: why in some cases does labor militancy occur and in others not? While initially framed as a comparative study of the Arab Uprisings in Tunisia and Morocco, Anderson is tackling a larger beast. In contrast to prior work, the book integrates research on labor, social movements, organizations, and North Africa to substantiate an argument that has clear implications beyond the cases at hand.
