ianca Baldridge’s new book describes the hopes, dreams, and fears of Black youth workers, whose dedication is challenged by tough working conditions. Baldridge effectively brings critical attention to the diversity of this frontline youth programming taking place in after-school programs, libraries, and standalone organizations. Laboring in the Shadows illustrates the kaleidoscope of programming, dreaming, lessons, conversations, and emotional processing happening within Black community-based youth work. Baldridge focuses on the people pulling off these daily minor miracles, often with scarce resources and visibility—working “in the shadows.”
