Risk assessment of potential infectious disease transmission via residential building drainage systems

With the global COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, aerosol vector transmission in community houses has become a key research object of concern from all over the world. To shed light on the risk of aerosol pathogen transmission in building interior spaces through a drainage and ventilation system during the COVID-19 epidemic, this study analyzed the trap mechanism of drainage pipes and factors in the risk of aerosol pathogen transmission, utilizing failure mode theory to establish a numerical risk evaluation index and evaluation system for aerosol vector transmission in drainage pipes. The risk assessment on aerosol vector transmission is based on the combination of the risk factors causing trap failure and acceleration of the spread. By analyzing 55 local cases, the potential risk is discovered. Based on observation, the risk value distribution was interpreted as a log-normal, positively skewed distribution. The database distribution indicated that a Monte Carlo simulation could be conducted to further investigate the average risk in the local area. Through simulation, a larger data prediction was conducted to further discuss the risk distribution on a larger scale. It is anticipated that the combined progression of building drainage technology and legislation would lower the average risk level across the country.
