• Field measurements identify PM2.5/PM10 evening peaks and BC morning–night maxima. • RF–SHAP reveals meteorology dominates particle variability, while BC is construction-sensitive. • Winds cause heterogeneous attenuation, with monotonic PM2.5/PM10 decay but non-monotonic BC responses. • Construction–traffic coupling creates localized pollution hotspots, challenging uniform control strategies.
