This article is dedicated to the scientific achievements of Robert K. Brayton in the field of nonlinear circuit theory, who passed away in January 2025. Internationally, he is recognized as an expert and pioneer in the fields of logic synthesis and formal verification as well as circuit simulation, but his groundbreaking work on nonlinear RLC circuits is rarely mentioned. Therefore, following a biographical sketch of Robert K. Brayton’s scientific career, his contributions to nonlinear circuits in the context of the applications that formed the basis of his research will be explained. In particular, we discuss the influence of his research results on the further development of the field of nonlinear circuits. Based on relevant literature, it is shown that the differential geometric interpretation of the dynamics of electrical circuits leads to a physical model for a broader class of physical systems, which is also of interest in control theory and physics.
