Robust Range-Based Localization Approaches Leveraging Multiple Wireless Interfaces

Location-Based Services (LBS) are increasingly important within the growing Internet of Things (IoT) domain, as they provide accurate context-aware information, i.e., the position of objects and users moving across a network. The key component of LBS is a positioning algorithm, which exploits wireless transmissions from anchors with known locations to infer the unknown place where a target is. To cope with the complexity constraints typical of IoT environments, GPS-free range-based methods are particularly suitable. To this end, two hybrid localization approaches, based on the fusion of wireless signal measurements, are presented and evaluated through simulations and real-world experiments. The results demonstrate significant performance improvements over conventional single-technology methods, underscoring the potential of hybrid approaches in enhancing the reliability of context-aware services across diverse IoT settings. The obtained results also provide practical insights into the implementation of effective hybrid methods.
