A series of symmetrical and unsymmetrical naphthalene hydrazide derivatives (NHs) were designed and synthesized, and their properties were investigated systematically to understand the role of structural variability on their self-assembly, photophysical, as well as electrochemical properties. All three molecules were found to exhibit high thermal stability, low clearing temperature, solution processability, high molar extinction coefficient, and a room-temperature columnar hexagonal mesophase. In comparison to corresponding higher rylene derivatives like the perylene series, these compounds exhibit enhanced mesophase stability and lower clearing temperatures while maintaining higher thermal stability.
