Root mixture analysis: methods and vision

Abstract

Maintaining crop diversity in agriculture is the key to move toward sustainable production of food, feed, and energy and is an effective strategy for C mitigation. Differences in root chemical stoichiometry serve as distinctive markers that characterize the unique attributes of the species. Current tools present significant challenges, making it difficult to analyze root-to-root interactions nondestructively in real time. Analysis of spectral signatures encoding the physicochemical properties of the root zone enables differentiation of root species in field-based root research.
