• A ROS-responsive injectable hydrogel for DMI delivery is developed. • DMI suppresses inflammation and oxidative stress in DPSCs. • DMI does not directly promote odontogenesis under inflammation. • DMI restores odontogenesis via macrophage-mediated modulation. • The hydrogel enhances reparative dentin formation in vivo.
