• Using prefecture-level panel data from 2009 to 2022, we find that rural financial development significantly increases land transfer rates. • Mechanism analyses reveal that rural finance promotes land transfer by alleviating agricultural financing constraints and accelerating labor reallocation. • The positive effect of rural financial development is stronger in economically developed cities, fiscally constrained regions, and areas with greater land endowment. • Our findings highlight the role of inclusive financial deepening in promoting rural structural transformation and improving land market efficiency.
