• Periodontitis promotes oral pathogens’ colonization in the gut via the “oral-gut axis”. • Kp94 from periodontitis inhibits intestinal ILC3/IL-22 signaling, causing glucose disorders and worsening diabetes. • IL-22 treatment restores gut homeostasis and islet function damaged by Kp94, improving diabetes. • ILC3/IL-22 is a potential therapeutic target for periodontitis-associated diabetes.
