Hydrophobically associated hydrogels are typically prepared by copolymerizing hydrophilic monomers with a small fraction of hydrophobic monomers in salt-containing surfactant solutions. The resulting hydrophobic domains form reversible physical crosslinks, imparting high toughness and self-recovery. Despite these advantages, the effect of salt species on zwitterionic hydrophobically associated poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (polySBMA) hydrogels, particularly regarding mechanical performance, adhesion, and self-healing, remains unclear.
