• Overlapping sampling is superior to non-overlapping, which under-samples microstates. • Sampling size is studied via JSD and entropy on random, chaotic, and EEG data. • Required sampling size increases with microstate size and is largest for random series. • Entropy analysis shows a sample size of O(104) is needed for k=3 microstates.
