Satellite Reference Databases: Lessons Learned

Satellite reference databases (SRDBs) are essential for managing the data required to encode and decode information exchanged between ground segments and satellite onboard systems, including both actual systems and those simulated through a digital twin. The process of defining this data within SRDBs is complex and has not been extensively covered in the existing literature. To address this gap, we present nine lessons learned from the design and development of an SRDB for a large-scale satellite program. These lessons encompass data identification, cleaning, and insertion and draw on over a decade of insights and experiences. Each lesson is thoroughly explained and illustrated with examples. We also demonstrate how these lessons were applied in practice. Collectively, these lessons aim to reduce the time required to develop and deploy SRDBs for future satellite programs.
