Science knowledge localizes

Abstract

• Why do technology firms often locate in clusters, near universities and science labs – especially if those universities and labs publish their science in public journals? • We focus on the interpersonal mechanisms of knowledge transfer and demonstrate that science knowledge localizes, even for science that is published and freely available. • Localization effects are bigger for the translation of science research to applications in medical care and in patents. • Given that firms increasingly rely on outside science research, firms should locate close to scientists and the original sources of science research.
